Winter Fuel Payment 2024

The UK Government announced changes to the Winter Fuel Payment to be effective from winter 2024.

The Winter Fuel Payment was introduced in 1997 as a way of helping older people meet the costs of heating their home in the colder months. The payment has historically been paid in one lump sum to those who meet the age criteria.

With immediate effect (Winter 2024), the Winter Fuel Payment will become means tested and will be limited to households with a pensioner receiving one of:

  • Pension Credit,
  • Universal Credit,
  • Income Support,
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, or
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance

We’ll be keeping an eye out for any further announcements on the subject and our energy advisers will continue to have one-to-one conversations with clients about their eligibility for the payment as well as any additional support available to them.
